Locus Information: ECA7 locus

Inheritance: autosomal recessive

→ Only animals with two copies of the Mushroom factor (mu/mu) show the Mushroom dilution.

General Information:

  • Mushroom is a coat color phenotype in the Shetland Pony.
  • Reduced production of pheomelanin (red pigmentation) dilutes chestnut color to a light sepia tone.
  • Near white mane and tail.
  • The basic color bay can be slightly affected by Mushroom.

Possible Genotypes:

Genotype: Effects:
N/N No Mushroom mutation.
N/mu The horse has one copy of the M-variant → the horse does not show the diluted coat color.
mu/mu The horse has two copies of the M-variant → the horse shows the Mushroom dilution, if the base color is chestnut.

Test information: This test detects a Frameshift Mutation (p.Asp201fs) in the MFSD12 gene.
