The CAG Dog Identity test is a “DNA fingerprint” profile that establishes your dog’s identity. Many registries and breed associations now require that a DNA profile be submitted for dogs to be registered or bred. Furthermore, If the dog is stolen or goes missing, the results of the this test can prove the dog’s identity and your ownership, even if a microchip has been removed or altered. The Identity profile stays the same throughout the dog’s life.
The DNA markers used are based on the internationally-recognized International Society of Animal Genetics (ISAG) microsatellite testing panel, and can thus be directly compared to results from other laboratories using this panel.
If you plan on submitting the results to your dog’s registry, check with them first to establish if you need to have a veterinarian collect the sample to verify the animal’s identity. If so, simply have your veterinarian stamp and sign it the submission form.
Each animal sampled is assigned a unique CAG-animal number, so if you want to have further tests performed in the future, only this number needs to be cited.
This Identity test profile can also be used to establish parentage or exclude a potential parent.
