Breeds Affected: Standard Poodle

Samples Accepted: Blood, Buccal Swabs

Disease Information: Neonatal Encephalopathy with Seizures (NEWS) is an autosomal recessive disease in which affected pups are born smaller than normal littermates and initially fail to nurse normally. After several days they will nurse more normally, however, more symptoms of the disease become apparent at 3 weeks of age when affected pups show weakness, trouble moving, whole-body tremors, and do not interact normally with external stimuli, including the littermates and mother. Generalized clonic-tonic seizures develop at 4-6 weeks of age, and most do not live to 7 weeks of age.

Inheritance Information: Asymptomatic Macrothrombocytopenia is autosomal recessive, meaning that animals with two copies of this allele will be affected. Animals with one copy of the gene will be clinically-normal carriers.

The possible genotypes are:
N/N The dog is normal, and cannot produce affected offspring.
N/news The dog is a carrier, and can pass the allele on to approximately 50% of any offspring. If bred to another N/news carrier, approximately 25% of the offspring will be normal, 50% will be carriers, and 25% will be affected.
news/news The dog is affected, but will not live long enough to reproduce

– Carriers may be bred to normal animals (N/news x N/N) without any risk of producing affected offspring. The offspring should be tested before breeding to determine if they are carriers or normal.
– Breeding two carriers (N/news x N/news) is not recommended due to the possibility of 25% of the offspring being affected.

Test Information: This mutation test identifies a single base pair change in exon 3 of the ATF2 gene.
